Unattended Children Policy

The Clyde Public Library is a welcoming space for children and families. While we are glad to have young patrons in the library, parents and caregivers are responsible for their supervision and behavior at all times.

Guidelines

  • Children benefit most from their library visits when accompanied by a caring adult. We encourage parents and caregivers to stay with children during their time at the library whenever possible.

  • Young children should not be left unattended in the library.

  • Children who are able to follow library rules and behave independently are welcome to enjoy the library on their own.

  • Caregivers should remain in the building during library programs for young children.

Disruptions or Safety Concerns
If a child is left unattended and becomes disruptive, distressed, or unsafe, staff will attempt to contact a parent or caregiver. If no adult can be reached, local authorities may be contacted to help ensure the child’s safety.

At Closing Time
If a child is left at the library after closing, one staff member will remain with the child for a brief time while attempting to contact a parent or guardian. If no one arrives within 15 minutes, the police may be called.

Responsibility
The library is not responsible for children left unattended. All visitors are expected to follow the library’s Patron Code of Conduct.

Adopted by the Clyde Public Library Board of Trustees on June 16, 2025.
